Hi Liam, very nice picture from a very familiar vantage point . You are correct that right underneath where you are standing was the Maclennan Ave CPR level crossing, right at the foot of a steep hill. In 1946, residents of Moore Park (on the north side of CP North Toronto Sub) voted on a City plebiscite to replace this level crossing. The plan was revised to shift the grade separation to the west to the new Clifton Rd extension, subsequently renamed Mt Pleasant Ave Extension on its opening in June 1950. The pedestrian bridge was built to facilitate school children who live in North Rosedale walking to/from Whitney Ave Public School st the top of Maclennan Ave hill. My wife Sandy walked our 2 children over this bridge every school day for many years as I did when I played hooky from work. The double cross over was put in when CTC was installed on the North Toronto Sub, and I think removed in the 1990’s, which was much appreciated by neighbouring residents as the noise level of freight cars clattering over the crossover switches was loud and annoying. Still a favourite place of mine to watch and photograph trains. Thanks very much for posting, John
Great location ! Hidden gem. The Mount Pleasant North Toronto Sub crossovers were handy when the CP North Toronto station was handling express freight etc., after passenger service ceased…
