Caption: Forty-eight years ago today, on Tuesday 1973-06-12 at mileage 68.3 Victoria sub. near South Wellington on CP’s E&N Division on Vancouver Island, a disregarded train order led to a southbound train with Baldwins 8011 and 8007 and a water car plus caboose colliding with northbound train No. 51 from Victoria with Baldwins 8008 and 8006. Here are the two leading units the next day, 8011 on right and 8008 on left, slightly separated after the 8007 and two cars had been pulled back to Wellcox yard in Nanaimo. Consider what could have happened if these units had been equipped with between-trucks fuel tanks like 8000 through 8004 were (with the behind-the-cab tank for steam generator water) for passenger service.
