CP GMDD SD40-2 #6043 is on the head end of the Weed Sprayer on a beautiful spring afternoon in... Wait, Niagara Falls!? Yep, you read that right. CP's vegetation control train took a trip up the Montrose Spur right up to the Junction with the Chippawa Spur in Niagara Falls. This is probably the first time a 6 axle locomotive has been on this line since November 30th, 2001.

    Amazing Matthew, great picture. Who would have thought that a SD-40 would ever reappear on the former ex-NYC/CASO/CP Montrose line, and all the way to today’s end of track. Did they spray the ex-MCRR Chippewa spur ? Did 6043 run around the train on its way back to Welland ? Thanks for your, John

    John, six axle are prohibited on the Chippewa. In fact, movements are restricted to one four axle unit – TE21 drops their second unit at the junction before proceeding.

    This spray train shoved the entire length of the Montrose back to the Hamilton Sub. They were not allowed to run around. Once back to the Ham Sub they went around the wye on CN and then back to Welland Yard.

    They also stalled coming out from under the Welland Canal up the grade in the cut. Was entertaining, to say the least, and allowed for some additional photos.
