A double-headed excursion behind CPR G5c Pacific 1271 and H1c Royal Hudson 2839 is seen departing Hamilton taking the connecting track at Hamilton Junction onto the CNR Oakville Subdivision headed for Toronto. The annual NRHS Buffalo Convention was held in Toronto at the end of August 1958 featuring a two-day set of excursions, one over the CPR and one over the CNR the following day. The CPR excursion ran Toronto - Guelph Junction - Hamilton and return via Oakville. An excursion on the CNR ran the next day.By this time only four steam locomotives (including the two pictured) were still active out of John Street, 1271 (last G5c Pacific, built by CLC April 1947), Royal Hudson 2839 (H1c, MLW 1937), 1265 (G5c, CLC 1947), and 2399 (G3g, CLC 1942), all but one of one of which would be retired and scrapped. The survivor, CPR 2839, is now on display at Sylmar California as part of the Nethercutt Collection. 1. Such a strange locomotive to display in California. It belongs in service, in Canada.

  2. Jacob;I have a movie taken by my father showing 2839 going thru Burlington eastbound without 1271. Another trip maybe??

  3. @Bruce: It would be another trip. I know this pair led a trip in June 1959. I’ve not seen shots of a trip with 2839 solo. Maybe it was in regular service?
