For a period of time GEXR train 581 was very predictable for motive power, with GP38 3821, the two FP9’s 1400 & 1401 and GP9 4001. Typically the “F” units were considered as “B” units and rarely led trains unless there was no other leader available. Unfortunately as their age took its toll the two “F” units eventually were sidelined for good. Thankfully OSR would save them from becoming scrap. Nevertheless train 581 was always a good catch and chase. This day as the weather deteriorated I chased train 581 westward from Stratford, unfortunately one of the “F” units was out of service but the train was still a nice sight rumbling over the creek in Mitchell and ducking under one of the few road bridges along the line.

  1. I recall chasing in this era. You’d chase until it got dark then go home. Slow, lots of customers lots of work. And good luck getting the F units leading.

  2. Shortline railroading at its best!
