Caption: For a number of years no trip to Niagara Falls would be complete without a visit to CN’s yard in town. It seemed like there was always some kind of interesting power there, and this day probably had the most variety I had ever seen in the yard. By this date GP9’s and GP38’s had replace the old SW1200’s that previously were in charge of the locals and yard jobs stationed here. Road power for 448 and 338 also often laid over here. It is hard to believe CN once had three main yards in the Niagara region. Fort Erie even had a large engine house but was the first yard to close. By this date Niagara Falls yard was still fairly busy but traffic here was definitely thinning out. A decade or so later and the yard here too would be history with all remaining Jobs assigned to Port Robinson. Today CN no longer assigns four axle power to the region and six axle power runs all locals. This day there was a slug set used for the yard work while the two GP38’s handled all other local assignments. Road power included a SD50AF, SD60, an original non Dash-2 SD40 and a rebuild SD40U. I miss hanging out on the old road bridge over the end of the yard here. All that remains is the mainline and the yard office.
