I didn't make it to Pukatawagan on my recent journey from Winnipeg to Churchill, MB, but I did manage to get an early morning shot of the HBR's Pukatawagan Mixed passenger equipment parked on a stub track at the south end of the station in The Pas, MB. It was cool, damp, and quite foggy when I first stepped off VIA 693 at 06:25 on this August 1st morning but as soon as the sun poked out of the clouds the mist cleared a little allowing me to get this tight view of the ex-VIA, exx-CN cars.

  1. My caption should read KRC (Keewatin Railway Company) Pukatawagan Mixed.

  2. This is a rare view. The lights are also unique on the side of the train as an adaptation for late winter darkness?

    It’s amazing there is VIA blue and yellow still in service in 2022!

  3. How often does the Pukatawagan mixed operate, and there is a same day connection with VIA trains ? Are than any KRC car numbers, emblems or markings on these passenger cars ? Nice to see contrast between VIA Cateau sleeper and ex-VIA baggage/passenger cars in blue paint. I note no Park car behind the VIA sleeper. All most interesting, John

  4. The Pukatawagn mixed is a twice a week passenger service to and from the remote native community of Pukatawagan, MB. I don’t know if there is a same day connection with VIA 692/693, but if there isn’t, a day spent in The Pas would not be a bad thing. ???? There were no KRC logos or numbers on the passenger cars. They have retained their ex-VIA, exx-CN equipment numbers without any logos. There was a Skyline car on my VIA 693 out of Winnipeg but unfortunately no Park car. It appears VIA only adds a Park car when there is a large tour group making the trek from The Peg to Churchill.

  5. Passenger cars on the KRC Pukatawagan Mixed are all ex-VIA, exx-CN equipment as follows;

    Baggage KRC 9631 ex-VIA 9631, exx-CN 9631 NSC built 1955

    Cafe/Coach KRC 3248 ex-VIA 3248, exx-CN 3248, exxx-CN 5454 coach CC&F built 1954

    Baggage/Coach KRC 5648 ex-VIA 5648, exx-CN 5648 CC&F built 1954 converted to baggage/coach in 1998

    Baggage/Coach KRC 5649 ex-VIA 5649, exx-CN 5649 CC&F built 1954 converted to baggage/coach in 1998
