This is one of my favourite scenes in Hamilton and I tried to do this quite a few times, with both RLHH and CN. The crappy thing is this scene is gone now, at centre is the "E" Blast furnace which was demolished about two months ago and is currently being cut up for scrap. Most if not all of the smokestacks and buildings are also coming down if not already. Therefore, this scene, as I just realized, is now no longer possible. Rats. It was fun while it lasted.

  1. The hardest part of this photo was getting it with no traffic. Very difficult to do…. I’d say this is the peak of my efforts here, no traffic, perfectly lined up lineside amenities (my position is carefully crafted to line everything up including the crossing bells, sidewalk and signs) and placement of the locomotive just as good as I could have done it.

  2. Is this Gage Ave??

  3. No Sir, Sherman Ave N.

  4. Interesting. “BFE” was completely refurbished when I did a co-op at Stelco about 20 years ago. I stood inside it! A quick bit of research revealed that the lifespan of a blast furnace is 15 years before it has to be refurbished or replaced. It’s time was up. Oh, and nice shot too.

  5. I can only imagine what you saw back there locomotive and steel movement wise… jealous

  6. And I wasn’t allowed to take photos! That was very frustrating!

  7. Well done. Nice old crossing frames.

  8. Definitely a shot for the ages… very soon we will have only Nanticoke BF running, as Algoma and DOFASCO transition to all Arc Furnace….

  9. Now crossing protection here and on the Grimsby on Sherman. Appear to be preparing for two-way traffic

  10. New*
