What would you choose if you had to choose between a conrail leader or a former ATSF leader, but you couldn't chase both? I chose this over  Conrail  as both trains were on the Talbot at the same time. Comment below on what you'd choose or if you want to give me hell for my choice :)

Comment below on what you'd choose or if you want to give me hell for my choice :) Pictured is CN 582 heading south on the Talbot sub after getting a clearance from the NI dispatcher, item 7 against NS 8349 south. Item 7 means both trains follow each other giving track clearances as they go.

  1. With a decent amount of NS power still being in Conrail paint at this date, I’d have also gone for the Warbonnet leader.

  4. Nice shot. I would have choses what ever I was closest to at the time.

    NI Dispatcher had a lot of territory at one time. All that’s left that I’m aware of is Grimsby, Stamford, Humberstone, Talbot and a few Mi of Cayuga.

  5. Homerjay, check the “conrail” that I linked to in the caption. I was near both, but this train was after the Conrail. Both trains were about 15 minutes apart on the Talbot following each other. Both trains would take about an hour to get to St. Thomas from London.

    NI desk was abolished about 10 years ago now, if not a bit more. The Canal and Thorold sub would have also been a part of it and it’s still in place, just rule 105 now.

  6. Stephen, yes you are correct, just didn’t include them since they are owned by TR and have been since I’ve been foaming around. Also all of the Fonthill Spur, Cayuga and CASO to St Thomas was part of NI as well. Unsure of the Hagersville I would have to check some old TTs so see.

    I thought it was longer then 10 years, 2007/8 I thought, but I could be mistaken

  7. was six axle common on 582 at one time?

  8. Yes, trains 386/387 from Detroit/Sarnia terminated in London and the six axle power ran down to St. Thomas and back as 582 in the daytime. There was also a 584 that ran south in the afternoon as there would have been two shifts. The 584′s I saw back then also seemed to have six axle power. I’m not sure how London ops worked otherwise back then a I didn’t follow it too closely.

    There was also a yard job that worked Talbotville proper, forget the symbol but I don’t recall shooting it over there, if at all. I did get one four axle job back then with a pair of 40′s but it could have been from London.

    434/435 was Toronto-Windsor at the time via the Chatham/CSX/CASO.

  9. And to be honest 509 reminds me a lot of 386/7 now, it’s basically the same traffic without the autoracks and doesn’t go into the US…
