Little did I know when I posted this photo http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50643 late last year that RLK 4001's days are numbered. Long story short, Genesee & Wyoming has made an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency to destroy 88 locomotives due to improper rebuilds and documentation. The locomotives must all be decommissioned and destroyed by December 31, 2025. Poor old RLK 4001 is on that list. The only other Canadian locomotive on the list is CBNS 1705. My most recent photo of RLK 4001 was taken September 1, 2021 at Nanticoke trailing GEXR 2303.

  1. Consent Decree here: https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/1563686/download

  2. Odd 4001 made the list but 4003 did not? Makes you wonder why they didn’t sell 4001 off and keep 4003, one less locomotive they would have to replace in the fleet.

  3. 4003 was sold to k&k in 2020 then resold to Lambton Diesel and now it works in Niagara in GIO paint.

  5. Another three letter government agency that’s gotten to big for its britches. EPA does more harm now than good. G&W and likely agreed as it was probably cheaper in the long run to replace the 88 aforementioned locomotives than take the EPA to court.
