On a CP mechanical On-Line Failures team trip to Toronto in 1994, an amazingly hot evening walk from the hotel up Markham Road took me to the Finch Avenue overpass directly above the Toronto Yard station name sign, and not-yet-rebuilt SW1200RS 8159 passed below westward at an opportune time at 1904 EDT.

CP 8159 escaped the CP switcher rebuild program, sold to Black River & Western in New Jersey in 1999 as their 8159, later BDRV 1259.

  1. I’m trying to picture this now, it seems that area is now warehousing/businesses?

    Nice shot.

  2. My Toronto experience is limited to 1994 and 1995, so Google StreetView at GPS 43.81229, -79.24590 is as close as I can come to the view today.

  3. Ken, I believe this is at GPS 43.801130, -79.242963 , there used to be a transloading shed (“Tormon Shed”) with sidings at the southeast end of the yard off Markham Rd., south of the Belleville Sub mainlines, with sidings into it (since redeveloped).

  4. MrDan, Having checked those coordinates, and found a power pole remarkably similar to the one in my photo, I believe you are correct. That lines up much better with another photo definitely from Markham Road, too. Thanks.
