The weekend of October 23 & 24, 1965 saw the Upper Canada Railway Society run an excursion on each of the class one railways. The Saturday trip running on the Canadian Pacific behind CPR E8A 1802 departed Toronto Union station for Hamilton's TH&B Hunter Street station via the Oakville Sub, before heading up to Guelph Junction, Streetsville, and north to Orangeville before returning to Union Station. Here, the train makes a runpast at Cataract, just south of the junction with the Elora Sub, seen climbing the grade at left. The Sunday excursion on the Canadian National ran from Toronto - Georgetown - Beeton - Barrie - Newmarket - Toronto and was captured at Beeton by Doug Page.John Freyseng Photo, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.

  5. Thank you for your comments, much appreciated. This CPR excursion behind 1802 was one of first attempts by the UCRS to operate an “all diesel fan trip weekend”. Being on the UCRS Trip Committee for over a decade, we were always looking for ways to attract riders, hopefully resulting in revenue for the Society. The 1960’s steam trips behind 6167, then 6218 were often paired with a TTC streetcar excursion the day before, offering a weekend of excursions. As Jacob Patterson described ( and many thanks to him for the beautiful scan & narrative), this 1802 trip was followed the next day by a CNR diesel trip to Allandale via the Beeton Sub and return home on the Newmarket Sub. Ridership was very good on both trips notwithstanding the cloudy, cool weather on the Sunday trip. Was fortunate enough to be in the planning, good times, good memories, John
PS – Sad to report my long time friend and fellow UCRS Trip Committee member Tom Henry who was so much involved in so many steam trips and this weekend event recently passed away. He will be greatly missed.
