VIA Rail F40PH-3D's 6458 and 6436 lead train #1, the Canadian, northbound out of Toronto on the beginning of its transcontinental journey to Vancouver. The consist of two locomotives and stainless steel Budd cars is seen pausing northbound on the Metrolinx (ex-CN) Newmarket Sub over a wide-open Highway 407 ETR (Sunday traffic), awaiting the light to back up onto CN's York Sub, and head east to swing onto the Bala Sub at Doncaster.

    Utterly bizarre how Canada’s world famous flagship train has to perform this silly maneuver at the beginning of it’s westbound journey… all because we tore up the Newmarket Sub from Barrie to Washago, and because Mimico doesn’t have a turntable.

    Dan, wow, most impressive ! With this new “high in the air” photo technology, it provides a completely new prospective for picture taking, such as this view of the 21 (?) car VIA wb Canadian. Looks like the first 2 cars (coach & sleeper ?) are deadheading west to Winnipeg or Vancouver. Thanks for sharing, John

    Hi John, yes – a completely different perspective from the air! The day’s consist was indeed 21 cars (plus two F40′s), and since the buffer car era is thankfully over, you’re probably right on the deadheads, unless they are for crew accommodations (Chateau Dollard and Craig Manor, the latter with blanked/missing lettering from the nameplate).
