Tempo-equipped VIA 75 departs Toronto for Windsor behind three of CN's RS18m locomotives. Like the skyline, the railway scene is changing with the construction of the fly under and associated track realignment. Note the VIA markings on the Tempo coaches, while the units retain their CN markings. These units were still owned by CN and leased by VIA until their retirement in 1983.John Freyseng Photo, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.

  1. Did the Tempo RS18′s ever get used for freight? can’t find a picture on this site..

  2. They went up to mac yard for service quite a bit, but in 6 years, I never saw one on a freight.

  3. Per Ron Bowman’s comment on this shot: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=28214

“CN had a job out on Mimico that ran to Oshawa. It used passenger power laying over between runs. I caught the job one night & we had an FPA-4 leading to Oshawa & a Tempo RS-18 leading the return trip.”

  4. That’s an incredibly long version of #75. Looks like around 20 cars. Amazing capture !

  5. Aitch, on Sundays, in the fall/winter/spring seasons, the noon departure for London/Windsor was always a heavily patronized train, including many university and college students returning to Western and University of Windsor, quite often being 16, 17 and sometimes 18 cars long – hence the third unit. Friday afternoon trains also required extra cars, but other days Tempo trains ran on this route with 8 – 10 cars only requiring 2 Tempo diesel units as seen in Ron Bowman’s picture. Not saying it didn’t happen, but don’t remember seeing a 20 car Tempo train. Thanks for your comment, John

  6. Thanks for that very interesting info John. I guess my eyes were playing tricks on me. When I look closer at the image I see that what made the train appear extremely long are actually cars on the adjacent track; hence my comment. Thanks again. :-)
