Caption: The GP35 was one of those stepping stone locomotives for EMD. While it was successful as far as early turbo charged engines go. Its powerful prime mover overworked the pre dash-2 electrical system, with electrical fires a common occurrence. Nevertheless the unit sold well in the United States, although many surviving units have been rebuilt and lost their turbo chargers. In Canada only 26 examples were built with all but a couple going to CP. CP’s examples lasted into the 2000’s before being retired with several sold off to Railink. While none wore full Railink paint at least two received full RailAmerica paint. These units have since been scrapped. They were always a nice catch and this dreary Saturday found RLK 2211 backing through (CN) Guelph Junction in Guelph after a trip up from Preston. They would leave their cars in the yard and head up to the Guelph North spurs. Back then this trackage was operated by the GEXR but today it is once again operated by CN.
