Caption: This photo was taken from the lower deck (vehicle traffic) of the Whirlpool Bridge over the Niagara River Gorge on US Independence Day, July 4, 1983, as we drove west into Canada. A Chessie train from Buffalo is leaving Conrail trackage rights and is headed westbound into Niagara Falls, Canada across the adjacent, upstream, Michigan Central Bridge. Chessie EMD’s 4440 and 4233 are leading the train which will cross the border in a few seconds. A peek of the Niagara River gorge is seen below the second unit, in the lower left of the photo, near the “Welcome to the United States” banner. The Michigan Central railroad bridge was closed in 2001 and tracks were later removed as part of a plan to free downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario, of mainline train traffic. The Whirlpool Bridge upper deck still hosts Amtrak trains to and from Toronto.
