Caption: Just over one mile east of Grand Forks, CP’s Carson spur diverged southward on an early (abandoned 1919) alignment of the Kettle River Valley Railway heading to Republic, WA, with the main CP customer being Pacific Abrasives & Supply abrasives crushing plant working with mine slag. On Friday 1974-09-27, MLW S-4 yard engine 7110 with a Watchman layover heater for cold weather was the assigned yard engine, based out of Nelson for heavy maintenance.
Since 1993, Grand Forks to and including the Carson spur has been operated by shortline Grand Forks Railway, with a Kettle Falls International Railway former (before 2004) BNSF interchange just south of the abrasives plant.
