Geez. I know I thought back at the time......."Of all things to show up on the Starlite" !!!! Hanging around at Bayview Jct late one afternoon, which was a common activity, I was hoping for some TH&B power.
But no. On the lead is that MLW M-640 #4744, the only one of its kind to ever operate over CP. Sure was a great surprise, and one of the very few times I ever witnessed it.
Second unit is CP SD40 #5533. The Starlite was a daily afternoon train out of Toronto destined to Hamilton's Aberdeen yard, and it would return within a couple of hours most days. I mention this because it has been a long time since the Starlite was in operation, and it has faded into history.
The 4744 (built '71)was probably going to be retired long before it actually was, but CP decided to use the locomotive for various testing and it eventually died, retired in 1992, and was stored in Montreal. In 1998 it went to the Canadian Railway Museum (Exporail where it is one of the museum's features.
This image is from 35MM negative film of some forgotten substandard name which I still regret using. But, back then, it was anything to save a buck.
