Caption: This is intended as a direct comparison with my post last week which showed CZ 8427 and log loads eastward in early morning sunshine on the same bridge seven years later. This one, with ALCo RS-3 4097 with an active water car (note the brakeman has the flush valve open to discourage any brake shoe sparks on the wooden deck) was taken on the second trip of the day around 1100 PDT on Monday 1974-07-29 (just ten months since 4097 was painted orange with white stripes), with notably less pleasing lighting than the first trip, and was my first try at climbing the tall tree that became a favoured camera perch. Within the limits of a 35mm camera and 45mm focal length lens, the river had to be omitted to include the tree line behind.
Often I wondered while waiting up that tree what would happen if something went wrong during my descent, as the crew would not have seen me, but would pass my truck (which they knew well) at the nearest road access half a mile further on.

Great image.
What an interesting structure. They put a lot of money in the steel span only to offset it with wood
