Here's an afternoon view of the old cinder block station, now closed, just outside of Wawa. Activity on the line here when the mines and smelter closed up in late 1997 and abandoned not long after. I'm not sure when the station was demolished but am guessing around early 1980s.The Michipicoten Sub is now in the history books, as is all the mining activity that once kept Wawa a vibrant community. The town has slipped from 4800 people down to about 2600, but fishing and hunting as well as a tourist stop along the Trans-Canada keep the town alive.
Even the rail station at Hawk junction where this branch met with the old AC mainline is now boarded up. Along the Mic branch, Hawk Jct was mile 0, end of line at Michipicoten Harbor was mile 26, and the old station at 18.6.

  1. I’ve always called any 3/4 angle shot of stations the “million dollar shot”….long admired this angle from once being a young lad reading Elizabeth Wilmot’s books, as well as taking my own photos through the years. Although this is one of the less attractive structures for architecture, it still ‘lures’ you in (yes, a pun to the current tourist status of the area today!).

Great photo….always love seeing your photos!!
