Went out this night for the first time in a while. It was a nice night, and the days are getting ever shorter, so I figured what the heck. Soon after, I hear 581 talking to the 1600 about needing to get in the clear, which certainly piqued my interest. Immediately, I wondered if they were at Hooper, a place known for some interesting loads (example here
and here). Sure enough, they soon appeared out of the Eastport area with a D9 dimensional and a convoy of trucks following them - including CN and even a PR firm documenting the move. I'd soon come to learn this was a test move, with the goal to get it out on the Grimsby and up to 35mph before taking it back down the N&NW and back to Hooper. I am under the impression the test was to see how the load itself responded to being moved. Sounds like they have shipped it other ways, and are also building another model with different materials to see how it responds (including to drop tests). The load itself is from Westinghouse - and I have no idea what it is but am suspecting it may be a mini reactor of sorts. Curious if anyone knows. Chased it but this was the only photo I got. The shadows far too long at the time of day for any other location to work. Was fun nonetheless and got to learn a lot from the people who were being paid to follow it.

  1. Nice looking power too in the evening sun.

  2. This spot worked great Terry. If this was two months earlier it might’ve been my most lucrative chase ever. Could literally meet them at every crossing they were going so slow. Just no other vantage had proper light for stills. I got a fun little video at Birmingham though.
