On Vancouver Island, bridge conditions at French Creek and Tsable River on the branch from Parksville to Courtenay meant closure of that section of CP’s E&N Railway effective 1975-06-30, so the preceding weeks were well filled with documenting operations that would be shutdown. While daily-except-Sunday RDC passenger service between Victoria and Courtenay was the most in the news, the Tuesday and Friday wayfreight runs from Nanaimo to Courtenay were also to be cut off. Here is the next-to-last Courtenay Turn, with the E&N’s longest-serving GP9 CP 8672, southbound by the flagstop shelter at Dunsmuir, fifteen miles north of Parksville, on Tuesday 1975-06-27.

The bridges were eventually rebuilt, and services returned to normal two and one-half years later on 1977-12-18.
