At that time, an unusual sight: MLW 1959 built S-13 CN 8519, operated by CN handles ex CP Rail MacKenzie Manor.

At TTR Bathurst Street, March 11, 1979 Kodachrome by S.Danko

The S-13's were the exclusive power for the CN Spadina coach yard – and most common CN power for downtown CN / TTR trackage.

Noteworthy

The initial VIA operation of the ex CP Rail The Canadian commenced October 1978, primarily out of Toronto. While the ex CN Super Continental was Montreal based. When VIA determined the ex CP equipment would be better serviced at Montreal, the origination of the two trains was swapped in June 1979. The ex CP Rail equipment did not return, for the most part, to the Toronto area until after the massive 1990 VIA cuts (thanks to Your Federal Government *).

 * Your Federal Government(s) killed the passenger trains - multiple times - per the “ forward planning budgets“ by multiple Feds: the Trudeau ( Pierre brand ) 1982, then the Mulroney ( Brian brand ) government 1989 effective January 1990.
