The Southern Ontario Railway has gone through many locomotive eras over the years. Start-up power was a bunch of worn out M420Ws, transitioning to a motley mess of geeps, and then the GP20Ds arrived. Now the GP20Ds are on the way out, and many are looking forward to the G&W era to start. This photo was taken near the end of the M420W era. On a snow-less day in December 2000, RaiLink had borrowed CN 4109 and CN 4107, which were parked at Garnet with RLK 2210. In Hagersville, RLK M420Ws 3509, 3508 and 3502 were sitting dead awaiting mechanical attention. The sole mechanic that was attempting to revive the MLWs allowed us to look around, so we took the opportunity to photograph RLK 3502 from the cab of 3508.

  1. Very nice. These sure didn’t last long.

  2. This is cool! I don’t think the SOR even parks power in Hagersville anymore now that 596 is abolished

  3. Joesph what job serves hagersville and caledonia now?

  4. As far as I know 597 does Caledonia and Hagersville now. I caught them a couple times in the early morning during the winter last year working Caledonia. They cut their train off up at Mines Road well outside of Caledonia and do their work before backing to the train and continuing on. Since 597 is normally nocturnal I haven’t seen any trains working Caledonia in a long time. Occasionally if they need to get cars up there quickly 595 (The Nanticoke Job) will run up to Caledonia in the daylight but I’ve only seen that once. It would be nice for 596 to come back…I miss seeing daylight trains on this side of Garnet
