NS 328 eases past Stuart Street Yard as a CN yard job switches out cars on a beautiful April morning.  It was not uncommon to see 328 operating with CP power and today CP 5661, NS 4002 and CP 5655 are in charge of the daily St. Thomas to Buffalo hot shot.

  1. Interesting, can you enlighten me as to what route was taken by this train? What was the status of the CASO sub? Thanks.

  2. CASO Sub wasn’t being used and was sitting dormant. CN was pulling up the center section of the Cayuga Sub, forcing the NS trains up the Talbot Sub from St.Thomas and over the Dundas Sub to the Grimsby Sub….

  3. Craig, csx used the caso from Detroit to niagara falls NY until April 1996 (and via fort Erie prior to around 1991), ns used the cayuga and chatham subs also until 1996. CN abandoned the middle section of each railway, csx opted to discontinue operations in favour of haulage, ns switched to a stamford/grimsby/dundas/talbot sub routing in ’96, but kept running via chatham sub. Also worth noting in ’94 ns discontinued their Detroit ferry in favour of the tunnel in Windsor, this rerouted ns trains over csx sarnia at chatham to Fargo and caso to detroit.

    Funny enough in 1995 you could shoot two to four csx, two ns, and two to four CN trains on the caso from Fargo to windsor. A underrated hotspot that was largely ignored…

  5. As I recall, NS started running over the Talbot/Dundas/Grimsby/Stamford subs in late 1994. Although longer, it was faster than operating over the Cayuga sub. Initially NS 327/328 ran with cabooses but later borrowed CP power so that they could go “cabooseless” in Canada. (Remember, Canada has a regulation requiring the ability to make an emergency brake application from the end-of-train TIBS. At the time, NS units were not so-equipped.)
