C424's CP 4239 and CP 4211 and an FP7A are working hard pulling a long train of general freight northbound on the Mactier sub. Recently re-painted CP 4239 has the wide stripe multimark scheme, as does the FP7A. CP 4211 wears the original narrow stripe multimark scheme it received some years before. The train is on the main line with Elder siding between it and the photographer. Interesting flatcar loads on this train included a combine harvester and a large transformer. Our mode of transport was hastily abandoned in the grass when my brother and I heard this train coming. We were only expecting to see "The Canadian". Since 1991 the south lead to CP's Vaughan Intermodal Terminal branches off Elder siding right about here.

    The stripes on the F unit are unusual. The white portions look larger than normal.

    Judging by the non-standard lettering placed further back and square winterization hatch (only CP’s first order of units had), I’d say that FP7 is 4037, which starred in the Superman movie the previous year painted up for the “Kansas Star”.

    A more complete re-scan of Alan’s slides found a going-away picture of the engines of this train. Confirms unit number CP 4037 is correct trailing engine. The front white stripes look generally wider than the red – appearance less satisfactory than usual. (Diagonal stripes are easier to do on flat surfaces.) One caution, high contrast/glossy/reflective white in sunlight can over-saturate the film (or sensor), expanding the apparent white area – definitely seen with the lettering.
