CN 523's crew gives a big wave to the test train crew doing an inspection at Ash on CN's Halton Sub. Since the demise 330/331 from Sarnia to Pt. Robinson there seems to be a big increase in traffic between Pt Rob and Mac Yrd. 523 ran 4 days in a row from Mac Yrd to Aldershot and back and there have been 524's from Pt Rob to either Aldershot or as in todays case, right to Mac Yrd. This is addition to the regular 421/422 trains.

  1. As an engineer what is your favourite and least favorite engine you have operated? And do you to operate older power such as GP9RMs, GMD-1s, GP40-2LWs, SD40-2(3)s and a bit newer power like SD60Fs and C40-8Ws?

  2. @CNSD60F. Thats a tough one as I have operated locomotives from 1st generation MLW’s and GM’s to the latest from EMD and GE.Plus I have operated units for many other railroads when they run through on CN. I think my favorite older unit to operate is the CN’s SD40-2′s. CN’s SD70/75I’s are my favorite to have in the lead. They are super quiet, especially when you have a long trip. The newer SD70M-2 are way too noisy for my liking. All the newer power is nice to have leading but only because of the creature comforts like air conditioning and better interior design. My least faves would have to be any unit with desktop controls like the (sorry)SD50/60F,HR616,C40-8M and early 2500 class C44-8′s. They are uncomfortable and very loud when in throttle 8, plus with everything including the cab, all in one carbody it just amplify’s the sound.
I have and still do operate older CN power. All the SW12RS’s are gone but they were fun to switch with. I have been lucky enough to operate the GP9RM’s right when they were new from rebuild. The GP40-2L were the standard when I started training and in those days units equipped with dynamic brakes were all out west and we used power braking. Having 5 9500 class units on the ore train headed for Hamilton was a blast.
I do miss the old C630/636′s once in awhile too.
Oh yea, NOT a big fan of the CN hand me down C40-8 or SD60′s at all!

  3. Ummm…. CN Still has SW1200RSs and RMs, One of them, 7304, is in service in hamilton and switches dofasco

  4. Yeah I have heard drivers HATE desktop controls, you would probably HATE the VIA F40PH-2Ds and the rebuilt versions (they have the d in the class for desktop) and plus have you ever drove go units?

  5. CN technically owns the unit, but is not on its active roster. Its confined to the steel transfer facility and only leaves when it needs work.

  6. Desktop stands suck. I have driven both the VIA and GO F40′s and the GO F59′s..also ex Rock GP40′s and GO F units power cars.

  7. Ah I see, but there are still a few more units, but CP on the other hand only has 1 more SW unit left, its a SW900 but its the weston shop switcher and its on the active roster

  8. The is an ex CN 1200 class based at the transfer facility at Mac Yard too, but again none active on CN’s roster.

  10. Thanks for the update. Great to see them on the active roster. Sadly none are active on any main or yard service around here.

  11. CNSD60F: I don’t know where you think 7304 switches Dofasco… it does not. There are no direct rails into Dofasco’s plant beside the steel centre. It’s all trucks.

  12. Stephen I think he probably meant that the unit switches the steel transfer facility.
There were rails that went to the Dafasco Bayfront, not sure if they are still there. We used to bring 730 the ore train in there. Dafasco had their own locomotives though, which were remote control. CN never switched the Dafasco plant.

  13. Bayfront still has rails, as does Central Shipping, but they have been idle for a long while now. My understanding is only locomotives and/or bottle cars being shipped in or out go by rail – at most once a year but much less frequently than that.

Dofasco did switch their own Central Shipping until a few years ago once or twice a week… but that has ended for now. Those cars went CP.

Again I think it’s all by truck now.

  14. This is the only picture of the Ash interlocking I could find online… nothing on flickr.
It’s an absolutely beautiful location that will soon be gone forever.
I wish I had discovered it sooner.

  15. This is true. However I know of one photo online that I saw quite recently ;) And a well done one at that.

Alex the inter-modal facility has already resulted in permanent changes down there. I’ve already captured shots in the last 2 years in advance of it that you can’t do already.

It’s only accelerating now as CN construction crews are full bore.

I’ve also looked at the construction schedule and a new track is going to be installed from main st in Milton to basically Ash (but of course there will be further re-locations of the mainline just south of Brittania Rd)

The temporary mainline is supposed to be installed this summer.

Permanent mainline installation begins June 2023 completed in 2024. (between lower baseline and brittania)

The construction schedule does not show the timeline/extension of the 2′nd main track north of Brittania road.

  16. Also I should mention some research I have done on the new intermodal terminal.

A recent land sale saw 200 acres trade hands for $165M that was purchased 6 years prior for only $15M. The land was purchased for industrial development fronting Tremaine road.

CN Shareholders should rejoice – $826,000/acre is the value of lands in that area now,

meaning the CN lands, over 1200 acres is worth a cool $1 billion

But yeah, essentially that whole area is going to transform into warehouses and industrial sites and the rich vultures have already flooded to the area buying up everything they can…..

    get your shots… I have…

  17. Right on… who needs farmland anyway… we can eat bugs imported from China… delivered by CN.

  18. Ahahahahahahahahahahaha
