Brand new CN 4000, with sister 4001, pose at Mimico Yard in October 1964. The only two GP35's CN ever ordered, they were built at GMD London in 1964 with what were "Canadian" spotting features not typically ordered on American models (headlight on the nose, bell on the cab, vertical steps and handrails). CN didn't place any follow up orders with GMD for GP35's, but did follow through two years later for 16 of the improved model: the GP40, followed by over 200 widecab GP40-2L/W unit starting in 1974.

CN's pair of GP35's, oddball units on the roster, were renumbered 9300 and 9301 before being retired in the mid-1980's. CN 4000/9300 went on to operate on the Dakota, Missouri Valley & Western as their 323, where it resided until being scrapped in 2002.
