Looking for all the world like a P.R. pose, the original London product has a good jag of Lasalle coke as the Port Colborne local exits the east end of the (then) new Welland tunnel. Algoma Steel's Canada Furnace Company will be the recipient of this product. In turn they will manufacture Merchant Pig Iron, some of which TH&B will carry in a reverse move, for consumer's like Brantford's Massey Ferguson foundry (Verity Works). All is well in the world this January day, as myself and Fred Gaines stand freezing our eyeballs on the highway 140 overpass. And yes, 71 sounded very nice charging up the grade !

  1. This is awesome Bruce!

  2. Bruce you guys are freezing your eyeballs on the Miller Rd overpass a little further east of the 140. Me and my friend would drive our bikes on the east side of the canal from Port Colborne and take the service road up to this spot and site under the overpass and railfan.
Awesome shot. Thank you for posting

  3. OK thanks, my bad on the specific road identity. At such time, it was ” a bridge” and it worked !

  4. So this is coke from the Lasalle Coke plant in Lasalle, Qc?

  5. Yes, I do believe that is my recollection of the source. Naturally, I stand to be corrected.

  6. Interesting… I didn’t realize that much was shipped out. The plant closed a few years later.
