Another view of CP's resident CLC DTC switcher assigned to Goderich: unit 17 is shown switching car in the yard, with the engineer leaning out of the cab window as a crewmember rides one of the 40' boxcars. Note the tell-tales visible above the first car, and the station on the far left. Lake Huron is visible in the background, beyond the caboose.17 posed in front of the station: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=2956018 at Goderich by the station platform: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=29474

  1. These Hydraulic-Diesel locomotives were always referred to by CPR on paper as HS-17 etc. All other units had 4 digit numbers. There were only 14 built by CLC and only for CPR.

They were intended for small yards such as Goderich. This was in order to reduce shop staff since an electrician would not be required. Only a machinist (mechanic) was needed.

Goderich was one of only a small number of yards (Owen Sound was another one) across the system that required only a yard foreman and one helper instead of two.

  2. I love Goderich, it must have been such an interesting place back then with both railroads active. Great photo!
