Rare that I saw much action around CP's Mattawa Station, unless it was a passing CP freight. On this day I decided to wander by on account the Rail Link annual picnic was taking place, a trek out to Mattawa station by train from North Bay. With a couple of passenger coaches, at least this was something a little different. So hung around a lot of the day, and did get a couple of CP trains roaring by, but the lighting there is a bit tricky, especially with the large station roof overhang that casts a dark shadow on the structure below it. As luck would have it this day, the Tembec Turn was returning from Temiscaming behind RLK 3586 and 5006, which resulted in having me scurry somewhere to grab a photo of a train on the CP North Bay sub as well as one on the CP Temiscaming Sub, the junction being just off to the left of me in this photo. It was one heck of a hot day as well, noted by the fact 3509s 'a/c' is open. The two leaders seen are x-CN MLWs, the 5006 trailing on the Turn is an x-CP GP35.

  1. That’s an area not often photographed.

  2. At least there was a mainline to keep company at the time – now you’d have nothing but the Grimmer Turn…. so many places in Ontario no longer have a mainline as a result of the Chalk River sub abandonment(s), so there’s no point to go ‘sit by the tracks’ for a day up that way, you have to find what you are looking for instead.

A great photo too, probably very difficult to get two raillink jobs in the same shot up that way even to this day.

  3. Recent satellite sleuthing tells me this station is gone… unfortunately. (never looked before)

  4. Easy to tell the mainline from the rest – the absence of jointed track is really obvious in this photo!
