The Goodrich-Exeter has been a personal favourite railway since I got my first decent camera back in the mid 1990s. The railroad has grown so much since start up back in 1992, not just in route miles but motive power as well. Veteran GP9's gave way to GP38's and GP40's. The GP40's later gave way to larger six axle power. While most of my time was spent chasing the predictable road trains #431/432, it was the locals such as 580, 581 and 582 that I've taken the most enjoyment capturing. The relocating of train 582's power to Preston would bring new possibilities, from parked night photos to week day chases to Guelph and back, not to mention the rare dimensional loads out of Babcock Wilcox. Sadly it appears that a lot of the GEXR will disappear by years end including the Guelph subdivision and connecting spurs, with CN taking them back and ending the lease with the Goodrich-Exeter. I feel for the employees of the GEXR and sister road SOR that face an uncertain future. In the last few years the GEXR has always been struggling with motive power issues, with units off sister railroads like SOR, SLR, and QGRY filling the void. Here we find local train 582 slumbering the weekend away along side the lumber yard at Preston, with borrowed Quebec Gatineau GP38 #2008 for power. Thanks Jon for leaving some lights on :)
