Three ex. Erie Mining Alcos from Hoyt Lakes, MN take a break in CP's Kinnear Yard before continuing on their journey to their new homes in New Jersey. The CP crew coming on duty that would lift these units was nice enough to escort us to the sunny side of the units for a shot. The home-shop chop noses on the two RS11s sure aren't pretty; considering they spent their career deep in the ore mine visual aesthetics clearly wasn't a concern. The trailing C420 looked much better.

Someone had big plans for these units but in fifteen years no progress has been made. Unfortunately C420 7221 ended up in Winslow Jct., NJ where it was heavily vandalised over the years and eventually scrapped. RS11s 7201 and 7202 are currently stored on a siding in Dividing Creek, NJ on the Winchester and Western Railroad. The siding also includes three former Long Island Railroad "Power Packs" rebuilt from FA1s, two former BC Rail Remote Control Cars (RCC) rebuilt from FBs and one ex. VIA FPB4. My hunch is the Erie Mining Alcos were purchased for their "guts" to be transplanted in the Alco FA/FB units, but nothing has come to fruition.

  1. Oh contraire!
At least one of the FA’s has been restored with parts, while two FA1′s will be the beneficiaries of the Erie Mining locos. I haven’t spoken to the owner in recent months, but I assure you, the FA project is very much alive.

  2. Well that’s good to hear. What’s the game plan? I wish the owner success with the project.

  3. Oh I remember when these came through on CP – they were a big deal and everyone was out.

So I have photos of them, but they are actually on FILM!! hahahaha hear that Arnold, FILM!

Awesome that you were able to get this, great light to boot!

  4. The owner has moved the locomotives from the previous location, due to everyone’s friends, the drug addict copper thieves. He has two FA2′s, which both retained their 244 prime movers. These are getting first rehab and are fairly close to completed. Two of the former SP&S FA1′s are a different story, and both require heavy replacement of innards, and this is where your Erie Mining locos come in. All this takes time and money. If you have a sincere desire to help underwrite the restorations, I’m certain we can put you in contact. Check them out on Faceplant, too.

  5. That’s really cool PRR, does this group have a website or contact? are they a museum or charity? Would be wise to find a way to funnel them memberships or donations for those interested.

  6. He’s a private owner, not a museum or RR. I think he may be on Faceplant, but I don’t know for certain. Let me check with somebody more involved and I’ll try to post a specific answer.

  7. If you’re soliciting donations it may be good to offer a few details such as where these FAs will operate, what they’ll be restored as, and who owns them etc. I don’t think many would feel comfortable just sending money to some guy in New Jersey without knowing some more information about the project.
