Islington Ave bridge over the yards of GO Transit's Willowbrook and VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre (since 1985) has been a useful vantage point to see passenger equipment and locomotives since the overpass opened in Dec 1979.
Much has changed since this picture was taken. By the end of 1990, GO Transit had taken delivery of the majority of their F59PH locomotives, replacing APCU's, APU's, and older locomotives. Similarly, VIA had completed its fleet of F40PH's. For several years after quite a lot of older equipment was stored in view of this bridge.
Facing the bridge partly sealed up are APCU GOT 900 and GP40-2W GOT 710 - my Trackside Guide indicates most GO Transit GP40-2W's went to CN in 1991. Three other APCU's face the other way on that siding, plus another to the left. Single-level GO Transit cab cars and blue VIA coaches can be seen on VIA yard tracks. The top of an LRC locomotive can be seen beyond the closest blue coach.
All long gone, and I believe that GO Transit's fueling area was relocated a long time ago.

  1. Great photo! Classic Canadian passenger portfolio. Note the LRC train set lurking in the background.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Stuart. I clicked on your name to see your pictures and was impressed. If you contribute more, people will like them. Wonder if Mark or Stuart or both are pseudonyms – no need to answer !

  3. Much appreciated jp! As you would no doubt would appreciate, scanning slides or negatives is somewhat laborious (and discouraging if the results don’t measure up!). Must find time to work on something to contribute.

  4. And the bubble of an RDC just barely visible.
