It seems only fitting to include a grain elevator in any railway image take at Thunder Bay. The city and grain have gone hand in hand for most of its existence. Unfortunately in more recent years some of the elevators have fallen silent for good as they are no longer needed but nevertheless grain still plays an important role in the cities economy, and both CN and CP still serve the city as well. CP has a number of units assigned to the city on any given day and on this day several decades of Canadian Pacific’s paint schemes were covered by this set of power. CP 5499 is one of a group of second hand SD40’s picked up in the mid 1990’s. The unit began life as Union Pacific 3004 and was rebuilt by MK into a SD40M-2. After several years out on the mainline the group found itself reassigned to yard duty, with a few always assigned to Thunder Bay.
