In early 1960, there were long lines of steam locomotives awaiting scrapping at various terminals across Canada. In this photo from the late spring in 1960, we see at least seven steamers awaiting a recall to service that will never come. Identifiable in the photo are the 5236, 5134, and 3459; some of the other engines might be the 2568, 3431, 3423, 8302, and 8385 which were present during previous visits over the winter. (Another photo taken the same day reveals the diesels to be GP9s 4513, 4458, and 4512; S4s 8146 and 8175, S7 8211, NW2 7945, and two other S4 or S7 MLW switchers.)

  1. Wish there were a similar image – from same era – of the train station in Merritton.

  2. Very interesting photo !

  3. My Father worked out of Stuart St.until 1957 and probably operated most of the locomotives in this photo

  4. Awesome photo. I was not even 1 year old when this photo was taken and yet I grew up to operate some of those same early diesels shown in this photo. LOL..the circle of life?

  5. I wonder how many miles these old girls still had as potential will still being pushed out of service. Doesn’t seem like a fit reward, you know?
