  1. A good example of the rear of the “Ogden multi” paint variation: the standard 5″ striping, but applied only 2/3 of the way up the rear and with a small multimark applied below the radiator grills.

    This variation was applied by Ogden Shops to a handful of GMD units (SD40′s, GP35′s, GP9′s, etc) in the mid-1970′s, probably because it didn’t involve the hassle of painting over the radiator grills, until (so the story goes) some higher-ups noticed and told them to go back to painting units normally with a large multimark and full-height stripes to match.

    The large multimark survived for a few more years on new GMD units, but eventually the small multimark was adopted for all repainted and new GMD units during 1979 (the grills at the rear of most MLW units didn’t seem to have much bearing on how the multimark was painted, so units like C424′s, RS18′s and M636′s all kept getting large multimarks as normal).
