Another fantastic steam excursion put on by the Ontario Rail Association. CPR 1057 rounds the curve heading west on the CPR Galt sub. In the background you can see part of the CPR West Toronto station which, unfortunately will be demolished in less then a decade.

  1. I went by this location on the tail end of an eastbound Frt. about 0530 in the morning. The station was being demolished starting early that day. About 1130 I was called for a westbound back to London and my room in the Toronto Yard bunkhouse was facing the hump that day. I looked out the window and there were a bunch of “air dumps” going over the hump with debris from the station piled up in them. I heard later that the company was concerned about public backlash and instructions were given to load the demo bits into railcars and get them away from the scene asasp. I’ve always wondered where those cars went to be unloaded.

  2. I should add, there’s a lot to see in this photo. Things like motorcar “takeoffs” are long gone. The West Toronto station demolished supposedly to make room for another GO track. I worked the Milton GO trains for a short time in 2000-2001. On the morning runs at least, we were almost never routed on the new “high speed track where the station once stood. Instead we usually went down the centre track and had to slow to 30mph for the switch on that track.
