To go along with Peter Lokin's 1972 photo, and Chris Rickett's 2023 photo, here's a similar angle of the former CPR station grounds in downtown Brampton: 

CCGX GP9 1000 blares its horn for the series of crossings downtown as it leads a short 5-car OBRY biweekly local, heading south on the approach to Queen Street grade crossing as it shines the rusty track on its way to Streetsville. The train has just passed Peel Ice & Fuel at Nelson Street (the long-time fuel dealer in the area dating from the steam era), and is passing by the former CPR station grounds.

The station (removed in the early 80's) once stood where the pile of dirt is on the right. The deteriorating foundation of the old freight shed remained on the left, used as a ramp, along with the shed siding (covered in snow). The middle (passing) track had been removed from its south end below Queen to the front of the station area, but the shed siding merged into it further north, and that joined the main track near Park Street. The disconnected south switch for the passing track and shed track was left in place by itself (switchstand visible in the weeds on the left). Photos suggest there was also another loading ramp and track on the east side, just north of the station.

The one thing I remember about this afternoon was it was a gloomy, melting, slushy day, and not having the right winter footwear to venture into the slushy, melting snow south of the crossing to get this shot.

  1. I remember Peel Ice and Fuel back in the late 1960′s when I went with my dad to visit them. I still remember a freight train working at the station and my dad had to drag me back to the car. Sadly it’s gone however the building is still standing. I expect in the coming year this scene will greatly change as new building construction will start.

  2. Some research shows Peel Ice and Fuel was bought out by Armstrong Petroleum of Bolton a number of years back, and this Brampton location appears to have been vacated in recent years. It’ll probably get knocked down and redeveloped with the rest of the railway lands.

    There was a siding that ran on the east side of the mainline, passing behind their building down to the ramp north of the station, but it doesn’t appear they were a rail customer (at least in the 70′s track diagrams).
