Nice one ! Anybody know what those hoppers were used for ?
Wouldn’t this job be on the Canada southern?
The hoppers were “Shiners”. The Westbound main between St Thomas and Essex was being used by Conrail to stored hundreds of cars destined for retirement. Some of these cars/hoppers were pulled from storage and utilized as shiners. Due to low traffic levels, they were added to Canada Division locals to basically prevent rust build-up and keep the rails shiny so that the ABS signals and crossing protection would activate.
RTCDave: Thanks for that very interesting information.
