Caption: Crown Zellerbach had three diesel-electric road locomotives over the years for their log hauling operation from Nanaimo Lakes to Ladysmith, a Baldwin VO1000 ex US Army, an ALCo RS-3 ex Delaware and Hudson, and this one, an MLW RS-3 chopnose ex Canadian Pacific 8427. It is shown here just arrived in the CZ runaround yard compass-north of Ludlow Road crossing in Ladysmith on Monday 1981-03-02, and is about to cut off the log loads and run around to the other end to back the train to the dump into the harbour.
This operation ran until 1985-06-20 when a fire severely damaged a bridge over the Nanaimo River, and this locomotive is now in the care of the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society in Port Alberni.
