Numbering's...
CP Rail 's 244 prime mover RS-10 units built 1954 – 56), set up for LHF ( long hood forward ) , and numbered in the high 8400 series (early builds) and RS-10s units primarily in the 8500 series, with some CLC H16-44's mixed in throughout all numbered series,
The 251 prime mover RS-18 units built 1957, set up for SHF (short hood forward) operation and numbered in the 8700 series
CPR GMD built GP9's in the high 8400's (early builds 1954), low 8500's, 8600's and the final builds (1958 – 1959) in the 8800's, except:
MLW 1957 built RS-10s #8824, is the last ever RS-10s built, created from from retired / wrecked unit FA-1 #4016 (the First)
(the s designated the unit equipped with a steam generator to allow assignment to passenger trains)
Under that CPR Script water tower, and in the final year of service, CP Rail 8824 at CP Rail Agincourt, a January 25, 1981, Kodachrome by S.Danko
#8824 Retired 1982, outlasting it's sister 244 prime mover Cab units:
Career Fini
Most recent 244 prime mover: The second CPR 4016 FA-1 was created in 1966 from components re-cycled from RS-10 8557 and FA-1 4014. [info per Patrick C. Doran's CPR book]. 4016 – 2 retired by the mid 1970's.
Preservation: Research to date shows that not one CPR FA-1, FB-1, RS-10, RS-18 are preserved . Ex CPR 4090 in Cranbrook is a FA-2 with FB-2 #4469; and stateside four RS-18u (the chopped nosed kind) are (were?) in service at operating museums. And VIA's sole RS-10s 8558 lasted only a few years, retired 1981. As of December 2025, are all OSR's MLW's sidelined? And GIO#1859 in service?
