Another rebuild for OCS
Further to the Generator Clothes Drying Car pic I posted a few days ago ( http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=58278 ), here is another 40' revenue boxcar converted to OCS duties.
CN 70724 is a Great Lakes Region Engineering Department Fuel & Tool Supply Car pictured here in the consist of GLR Tie Gang #4 at Oba, ON in July 1976.
This car was rebuilt along with many others in a project at Pointe St. Charles shops in Montreal during October 1975 (H.Q. 10 .75)
Some interesting features on this car are:
-high brake wheel and foot stand
-no roof running boards
-ladder rails left in place, but higher rungs removed (at far end of car)
-lower foot stand added to aid in refueling the 1000-gallon reservoir inside the car
-coupler painted in error (AAR Rule 18)
-consolidated stencil under CN logo at far end
-ACI (Automatic Car Identification)/Kar Trak label (left of door opening)

  1. Not to mention the standard Atco power connection/cable to provide lighting and receptacle power in the Tool Car.

  2. One of these was in Chatham until after 2020 used for MOW storage mounted on rails, it’s now gone.

  3. Hi Steve. I believe that car in Chatham was CN 551752 an Engineering Department Tool & Material storage car, built November 1957. It was sitting on a track panel for years. I snapped it from a moving VIA #76 on April 12, 2022.

  4. Terry, yes, those Crouse-Hinds cables and receptacles made life so much easier on the road. Much better than having to pull lengths of cab-tire between cars to get power into some of the older boarding and tool cars. :-)
