Caption: From 15 November 1981 until 2 June 1984, VIA operated daily trains 103 (westbound) and 104 (eastbound) between Saskatoon and Edmonton over CN lines. A pair of sister trains (Numbers 109 and 110) ran between Saskatoon and Regina over CN, then over CP lines from Regina to Portage la Prairie, using the CN Rivers sub between a CP-CN connection west of the Portage station and Winnipeg Union Station. These trains were not overly successful and from June 1984 to May 1985, VIA restored through service over an all-CN route (“the Panorama”). Subsequently, on 1 June 1985, VIA restored the Super Continental between Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. Here we see No. 104 departing Edmonton on a spring 1984 day, just into its 6 hour and 50 minute trip to Saskatoon.
