A very old boxcar with a very old coal loading facility... The Atlas Coal mine. Everything is in pretty decent shape!

  1. Great pictures! I worked with an old conductor who switched these mines when they were active. Apparently Garter snakes used to hibernate at these mines and would form into huge balls. The trainmen would tie off the bottom of their pants so the snakes wouldn’t crawl up their pants. He said it was quite unnerving, especially at night.

  2. That sounds a bit unnerving for sure, (and I don’t have a particular liking for snakes) Were there balls of multiple snakes a piece???

  3. The snakes would find holes in the ground that would protect them from the winter elements, there were quite a few locations.
