Caption: Shoving on the rear of a special shuttle train, CP SD40-2 5792 carries the markers on the west end of a set of GO bilevel coaches passing beneath Bathurst Street on approach to Union Station. GO GP40TC 726 leads on the east end. In September 1984, Pope John Paul II celebrated an outdoor mass in Downsview Park before an estimated 400,000 people. No car parking was allowed for the general public on or near Downsview Park, everyone attending was encouraged to take the TTC subway to Downsview and use shuttle bus/walk to the site of the mass. In addition to the above, GO ran a large number of extra trains on the Lakeshore Corridor to bring the Downsview Mass attendees to the Union Station where they would transfer to the University Line subway to Downsview, TTC running a rush hour schedule. The pictured equipment would run up the Newmarket Sub to Rutherford Rd GO Station before proceeding to the makeshift platform built at the De Havilland air craft plant near Downsview to shuttle people who parked their cars at Rutherford GO to the mass.
Looking closer at the Spadina facilities at right, CN 8516 is handling the usual coach yard chores, while an interesting piece of equipment from Speno lingers in the background. Images of Speno rail grinding trains have appeared here before with converted GP38s and F40s, but this unit, appearing to be double ended, may be one of Speno's Rail Surface Analyzer cars. These did operate in Canada, one run being mentioned in the comments by Ron B, who piloted it Toronto - Guelph Junction - Hamilton.
GO Transit also borrowed CN power on this day.
