Prior to the construction of VIA's Winnipeg Maintenance Centre in the late 1980s, passenger cars were kept in the East Yard and moved up to station by the "depot" switcher (a GMD1 in the winter and an SW8/SW900--or occasionally an SW1200RS--in the summer). On a cloudy March afternoon in 1982, CN 1900 moves a VIA/ex-CP stainless steel car through the yard. Off to the left you can see the passenger cars for the Prairie Dog Central steam train which operated on Sundays in the summer from CN's St. James to Grosse Isle. Behind the coaches, the Rivers Sub freight tracks bypassing the station can be seen. Today there are also several hoppers of coal for the steam heating facility which supplied the station (note smoke stack and the dome complete with a red CN logo). Of course, today this is The Forks market.
