Caption: Storming through Hamilton Junction, CPR 5118 and 5214 take charge of an NRHS Buffalo Chapter excursion heading up the Goderich Sub to Guelph Junction, before speeding east down the Galt Sub to Streetsville Jct. These two locomotives are just the first of six pressed into service for excursionists on this day, with CPR 1098, and 1092 handling the train from Streetsville to Orangeville and Fraxa, and CPR 2214, and 2332 taking the train from Streetsville back to Hamilton.
Note the new searchlight signals on the Oakville Sub and CN's "cowpath." Less than a year old, CN upgraded the plant around Bayview Junction and Hamilton Junction with Centralized Traffic Control in late 1958, plus trackage through Hamilton to N&NW Junction, where the N&NW spur and the Hagersville Sub branched off from the Grimsby Sub. The whole operation was controlled from Hamilton's James Street station. The concrete base of the old Hamilton Junction tower remains to the left of the crossovers in the distance. The October 1958 issue of Railway Age, volume 145, issue 16, features an article on the recently completed upgrades on pages 26 - 29.
