Forlorn Van
BCOL 1884 sits abandoned on an overgrown backtrack in the BC interior along CN's Bulkley Sub. near Andimaul, BC.
Searching the internet, I read that BCOL 1884 was the cab on the last caboose equipped train on BC Rail that departed Fort St. John for Fort Nelson on August 12, 2004.
My photo is 22 years later on September 4, 2026.
BC Rail, CN, and VIA Rail all represented in this photo. Location approximate.

  1. Nice catch Paul, and in true green BC Rail paint! Well, what’s left of the paint anyways LOL

Something to think about – on the tank train through Chatham, I always see they use old grain hoppers behind the engines, and usually one or two at the end if there is a DPU pushing. I’ve always wondered why they don’t start using the vans again? Much more interesting to look at, you don’t have to use crew members really. And to me they stand out more for safety reasons than what grain cars ever could. Just a thought…!

  2. Todd, there aren’t enough vans – buffer cars are mandatory for tank trains between locomotives and tank cars in certain situations, and the railways are basically using any old company owned freight car as the buffer. A van could be used, but I bet you can count the number of vans left each Class 1 on one or two hands give or take, especially for Canadian Class 1′s.
