GO Transit self-propelled car 9826 and another sister car head westbound on the CN Kingston Sub through Scarborough, seen about to pass under the Woodrow Blvd. bridge on the stretch between Birchmount and Kennedy Rd. In the distance beyond Kennedy is Scarborough GO Station.

GO's nine self-propelled single-level cars (D700-D708, later 9825-9833) were intended for covering regular and off-peak service, with the idea that the rest of the Hawker Siddeley fleet could be converted to self-propelled cars if they proved to be reliable. But, due to ongoing reliability issues with the Rolls-Royce engines, they were eventually all depowered in the mid-70's and used as regular cab cars. 9826 (built as D701) was one of two built with a cab at each end, designated RTC-85SPD. It was sold to Ontario Northland in 1985 and converted into lunch-counter coach 701.

  1. Can’t imagine how they got the exhaust to work like that.
